Columbus Day

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the day in 1492 when people in the Bahamas discovered some lost Europeans wandering aimlessly on their shores.

Have a good day!

Wordless Wednesday

Okay, Okay, Okay...

...so lately there isn't even any chatter on this blog, let alone birding. Things have gotten a bit busy lately, since I got a part-time job for the summer. And I don't work a couple of days and then have days off. I work different days, different hours, different days off. So it's been hard to find the time to do anything. Even the laundry doesn't get done until I'm finally out of clothes. My house is a mess. But, what can you do. I needed to do something, or else I would have been shut up in a big padded room.

Bill still has the same job. Nothing much has changed there. I really wish he would get word that the job was permanent. No word yet on that front.

I just wanted to let you all know that I haven't forgotten about you. There just isn't a whole lot of news, or birding, to write about.

Speaking of birds, I have baby robins and baby house sparrows everywhere. Since robins are territorial, I think they are keeping other birds away. I had a couple of Goldfinches, but haven't seen them in a while. And I have spotted a Ruby-throated hummingbird every so often. And that's it for the birding. Chomping at the bit to go birding, but I am really not on any type of migration route. Most of the birds here are here all year long.

Talk with you all later!

May you next bird be a lifer

Happy Earth Day!

Did you plant a tree? Did you see a bird? Did you BREATHE?

Let's see...

...where was I. I really don't remember what I've been talking about since it's been such a long time. So, I'll just start where I am now.

Currently, I am living in Kulpmont, PA. I'm not completely happy with this decision, but the decision had to made before last winter or we would have had to move back to Florida for the winter and that wasn't going to help the job situation. Bill has taken a job at Mansfield University in Mansfield, PA. It's about 2 hours north (give or take) of here. He isn't commuting, but has an apartment up there and comes home on his days off. Like his other position, his days off change and are not regular. We were used to this when we were in Anchorage, but it was much easier when we were living in the same house and at least got to see each other in passing. His job is temporary, so we really don't want to make any other decisions about where we want to settle and what I want to do for a job until we have a better idea as to whether it's going to be permanent or not. It's making me a little more independent. I have the dogs and take care of the house. I have yet to forget the recycling or the garbage. (Knock on wood.)

I am currently employed at Knoebels Amusement Resort in the campground. Apparently staying in dozens of campgrounds in the past year of so makes me an expert. It actually makes me appreciate the RV resorts we stayed in while we were traveling. I don't think we would have stayed there if we were still traveling. Too many campers and not enough RVers. I have become an RV snob since our trip. It's hard to appreciate a tenter when you've lived in an RV with a washer/dryer and central vac.

I've spent almost the past year looking for a job, with no success. This area doesn't have many jobs, period, let alone a job for someone with 10 years of experience in accounting. Hence the campground, seasonal position. Am I bitter? Very. But I'm trying to cope. Some days are easier then others. Some days I just don't care and some days I want to bite the head off of something. Or someone. College degrees count more here than experience. Borders on hiring discrimination, but it's not worth fighting because I feel that if that's the way the company thinks, do I really want to work there anyway?

So, as you can see, nothing much has been happening. Nothing really new, except Bill's job and my new way to spend a day. We've been trying to save some money now in case we need to move again. Just hanging out with the dogs.

The dogs are doing well. Meika is now 6 and is getting a tad fat. She really doesn't like the heat here, even though it's only in the low 60s. To her it might as well be 100. Eugene just plays with his ball. He's 4 1/2. Still acts like a puppy. He misses Bill when he's working. I'm a very poor substitute. Meika just goes with the flow.

I haven't done much birding while I've been here. There doesn't seem to be many birds around. Mostly House sparrows and Starlings. I don't exactly live in the midst of a migration flyway, so it's hit or miss as to what I get. I do have a pair of Cardinals that are regulars and a pair of Mourning Doves. Today, a House Finch actually stuck around long enough to try the thistle in the feeder. And Robins. There are a lot of Robins around here.

So, that's it from "the black hole of hell." (I'll tell you about that one day.) I'm going to try to write more regularly since I now have a job and feel just a tad bit better about things.

May your next bird be a lifer!

Coming soon...

An update is coming soon. I am working on it. I am trying to put a timeline to what's been happening and what's coming up.

Check back soon!

Happy Birding!
